When you think of a shelter, you might picture animals coming in and leaving just a few days later. The truth is, the journey from intake to a forever home is much more complex and can take a lot of time. We want to shed some light on the process and what happens behind the scenes.

There's a lot that goes into preparing a pet for adoption, and it’s rarely a quick process. Our team works tirelessly on vetting, behavior assessments, behavior modification, training and socialization, emergency medical attention, adoption promotion, waiting for interest, and arranging transport—all of which can extend a pet's stay.

The time it takes for us to reach out to our waitlist varies greatly because of these factors.

We wish we could get every animal into a new home immediately, but our priority will always be quality care and ensuring they are healthy, happy, and ready for their new family.

This is what's best for them, and it also allows us to help more animals in need.

Take Cherry Cola Lola, for example. This sweet, well-mannered dog was a staff favorite, but even with all our efforts to promote her, she waited four months in our shelter. She was then accepted into a rescue partner's foster program where she spent another seven months before finally finding her forever family in WI. That's a total of 11 months from the time she came to us.

We are working our systems as hard as we can because we want to save as many lives as possible. We are so grateful for your patience and for the incredible support of our community. Thank you for standing with us as we work to give these animals the second chance they deserve.

Today was a truly special day at the shelter, thanks to a wonderful group of women from a local assisted living facility. They spent their afternoon with us, sharing smiles, stories, and plenty of love with our cats and even a baby goat!

Seeing the joy on their faces as they cuddled with our furry friends was a powerful reminder of the simple happiness that connection brings.

These remarkable women brightened not only our day but the lives of every animal they met. We're so grateful they chose to spend time with us today.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Paws and Pages event this past Saturday! We had a fantastic time with 26 readers and cat lovers who filled our cat wing with so much love and support. It means the world to us to see our community come together like this.

The recent animal rescue in Grundy County is a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we come together as a community. Within just a few days, nearly all the dogs and cats have been safely removed from the property and are now receiving the care they desperately need. We are sending positive vibes and prayers to our rescue friends who are trying to safely trap and remove the remaining dogs that are terrified at large.

At Animal Harbor, we were able to play a small but crucial role in this ongoing effort. This weekend, our friends at MARC (Marion Animal Resource Connection) went up to get those left behind, with us on standby as they went to access the situation. They successfully helped rescue three presumed siblings, with two going into MARC's care and the third being taken directly by a vet. That third pup, heartbreakingly close to death, immediately tested positive for Parvo.

Once MARC received this devastating news, they reached out to us for help. Their facility was already at capacity, and their amazing foster families couldn't risk exposing their own animals to Parvo. Luckily, our isolation unit became available just in time after another pup in our care received a medical release. These two are now at our shelter and being closely monitored.

While this story is a beautiful example of our rescue community coming together to do amazing things, it's also a stark reminder of the lack of resources for both people and animals in our Middle Tennessee communities.

Many organizations, including ours, are already stretched thin, and every day is a battle. We desperately need more support from our leadership and local governments.

This crisis—and many others like it—will continue to happen and pile up, putting even more stress on non-profits that are already struggling. Now is the time to use your voice for good. You can make a difference and demand better. You can ask your local leaders the hard questions and make your vote count.

Together, let's get serious about advocating for better support and resources. No animal deserves to suffer.

Additionally, bunnies can produce dander, which can be an issue for people with allergies. If you're considering a rabbit, please do your research to ensure you can provide them with the long-term care they need to thrive!

From Puppy to Pampered: Lettie Finds Her Forever Farm!

Many of you watched Lettie grow from a young pup into the wonderful, energetic and smart dog she is today, right here within our shelter walls. Her adoption is a true victory for our dedicated staff and volunteers who have poured their hearts into her care for so long. She was truly set up for real success after training, socialization, and comprehensive vetting.

We often hear people say, "This dog needs a farm" or "They need somewhere to run." While we believe every dog deserves ample space and exercise, we also firmly believe that all dogs can thrive in any environment as long as they receive consistent affection, enrichment, and appropriate boundaries.

And in Lettie's case, the universe truly aligned! We are absolutely beyond excited to share that Lettie is off to live her best life on a family farm, where she'll have the freedom to explore (within safe, fenced boundaries, of course!). We couldn't imagine a more perfect setting for our energetic and smart girl!
