Today started like any other, but quickly turned into a life-saving mission. We received an emergency call for a mama cat in extreme labor distress. The veterinary team at Town and Country was able to jump into immediate action, working swiftly to navigate a very difficult and traumatic delivery.

While the road ahead is steep—the kittens are premature and mama is still waiting for her milk to come in—we are choosing to focus on the miracle: Mama and two of her precious babies were saved.

They aren't out of the woods yet.

Our amazing Wellness Coordinator, Whitnie, has stepped up to provide 24/7 around-the-clock care in her own home to give them the best fighting chance. Mama wasn’t quite ready for her "close-up" after everything she’s been through, but we couldn't resist sharing these tiny, fragile toe beans with you.

There is something magical about watching a Kindergartener learn that they have the power to communicate with animals. This week, we visited Cowan Elementary to share our "May I Pet Your Dog?" lesson with every single Kindergarten class!

Beyond just "petting a dog," these students learned the vital language of boundaries. We practiced the proper steps to approach an unknown dog on a leash, ensuring both the child and the pup feel safe and respected.

Why this matters:

🛟Safety First: Kids learn to read a dog's body language before reaching out.

⭐Building Boundaries: Understanding that "no" is okay—from both humans and animals.

🦸‍♀️Empowerment: Children leave feeling confident, not fearful.

In a tragic turn of events, Sarah James is dead to us.

We gathered this week to mourn the loss of our Wellness Assistant, Foster Coordinator, and Content Queen as she departs for the afterlife (also known as Texas). We wore our finest black, held a service, and made it very clear that we were just starting to like her after seven short years.

In all seriousness, Sarah’s "reincarnation" in the Lone Star State leaves a massive hole at Animal Harbor. From her middle school volunteer days to becoming the mastermind behind Paws for Pages and our viral TikToks, she has been the heartbeat of our community engagement.

Sarah, thank you for the energy, your heart and deep dedication, the adoptions you sparked across the country, and for being the best "corpse" a workplace could ask for.

Texas is lucky to have you. We’ll just be here... mourning. 🕯️🐾

29 Lives, 1 Mission: The Journey Home

Last night, the air was filled with wagging tails and hopeful barks as 7 of our very own Animal Harbor residents loaded up for their freedom ride! 🚐💨

They weren’t alone, either. We were honored to share the transport with 22 other lucky pups from Coffee County Animal Control and New Destiny Dog Rescue. Together, these 29 survivors are heading to Wisconsin to find the forever families they’ve always deserved.

From this moment on, they will never know the feeling of being abandoned again. Only cozy beds, full bowls, and endless love from here on out!
It takes a village, and ours is incredible.

While we can’t name every single person who played a part, we have to give a massive shout-out to:

Our volunteer drivers, Karen and Julianne: Thank you for the long hours behind the wheel to get these babies to safety.

Lakeside Veterinary Clinic: Thank you for the endless medical checks and for prepping their "passports" out of Tennessee! 🩺 🛂

Safe travels, sweet pups. Wisconsin isn’t ready for all this cuteness!

We have some wonderful news to share: Elvis is showing signs of improvement! He’s surrounded by so much love here at the shelter, and he’s soaking up every bit of it.

Health Update:

His Head Injury: It’s slowly healing! Don’t be alarmed by the bright red color—that is simply the medication being applied directly to the wound.

Heartworm Care: After a lifetime exposed to the elements, Elvis is also beginning his journey through heartworm treatment. We are "peeling back the layers" and taking his recovery one day at a time.

We are looking for an experienced medical foster to help Elvis through this next chapter. Because his care involves wound management and heartworm recovery, we are seeking someone with a background in medical fostering to provide the quiet, specialized environment he needs.

If you have the experience or willingness to learn to help Elvis heal, please reach out! He is the sweetest guy you will ever meet.

Some dogs are just "extra."

When Otis (formally known at the shelter as George Jones) was with us, he was a lot to handle. He was rambunctious, high-energy, and keeping him under control was a constant challenge. It would have been easy for anyone to give up on a boy like him.

But we knew that beneath that wild energy was a loyal, trusted companion just waiting for the right bond. It took the right people, the right dedication, and a very specific kind of love.

A Gut Decision and a Long Drive 🚗💨
We’ll never forget the day his mom arrived. She had driven many hours specifically for him. While we don’t typically do same-day adoptions on the spot, her commitment was undeniable the moment she spoke, and we made an exception after she received an exceptional vet reference and shared her desires to work closely with a trainer.

We are so proud to announce that Otis officially graduated from Basic Training on March 5th! His mom reports that he is a sensitive, hard-working boy who loves his bowtie collars and even "pouts" if you raise your voice.

From his mom: "He has mastered sit, stay, down, wait, and leave it. He even knows how to walk without pulling us over! When we go to bed, he claims the middle spot and puts his head on Dad’s shoulder. We are so lucky to have him. I hope he knows he is stuck with us forever."

When Otis (formally known at the shelter as George Jones) was with us, he was a lot to handle. He was rambunctious, high-energy, and keeping him under control was a constant challenge. It would have been easy for anyone to give up on a boy like him.

But we knew that beneath that wild energy was a loyal, trusted companion just waiting for the right bond. It took the right people, the right dedication, and a very specific kind of love.

A Gut Decision and a Long Drive 🚗💨
We’ll never forget the day his mom arrived. She had driven many hours specifically for him. While we don’t typically do same-day adoptions on the spot, her commitment was undeniable the moment she spoke, and we made an exception after she received an exceptional vet reference and shared her desires to work closely with a trainer.

We have a very special update to share! Remember back in February during our Valentine’s Paws and Pages event? We noticed a little spark between one of our favorite residents, Dallas, and the Dore family.

What started as a sweet "crush" during storytime has blossomed into a full-out love story! Dallas has officially headed home for his foster-to-adopt trial.

Dallas has been a shelter favorite, and while his kennel feels a little quiet today, we are so thrilled he's getting this chance to see what life is like in a forever home.

This is exactly why we host events like Paws and Pages, to facilitate those "love at first sight" moments that lead to lifesaving matches.

Whether you're looking for a quiet place to dive into a new book or just want to share some affection with our residents, this is the perfect way to get into the holiday spirit.

Charlotte is ALL smiles 😁

They say when you know, you know. For the Reynolds family, a three-hour drive was a small price to pay to meet the dog who had already captured their hearts.

Charlotte isn't what some might call an "easy" dog. She’s massive, wonderfully rambunctious, and possesses an attention span that… well, let’s just say she lives entirely in the moment!

Even a heartworm diagnosis couldn't dim her spirit or deter her new family. While others might have seen challenges, the Reynolds saw a girl who just needed a soft place to land and a family strong enough to keep up with her and nurse her back to good health!

They say when you know, you know. For the Reynolds family, a three-hour drive was a small price to pay to meet the dog who had already captured their hearts.

Charlotte isn't what some might call an "easy" dog. She’s massive, wonderfully rambunctious, and possesses an attention span that… well, let’s just say she lives entirely in the moment!

Even a heartworm diagnosis couldn't dim her spirit or deter her new family. While others might have seen challenges, the Reynolds saw a girl who just needed a soft place to land and a family strong enough to keep up with her and nurse her back to good health!

The best Valentine’s Day gift of all: A New Beginning. ❤️

Last night, a very special van pulled out of our driveway, loaded with hope and headed toward forever.

We are so thrilled to share that 13 🐶 dogs, 12 😸 cats, and 2 🐇 rabbits are officially on their way to their new lives outside of the shelter 🏠.

This transport is extra sweet because it includes some faces that have become part of our daily lives here. While some were only with us briefly, others like our beautiful black cats Trace and Shania actually grew up within our walls.

Watching them head toward the arms of people who will love them forever is the ultimate "Happy Valentine’s Day."

We were also honored to have some very deserving dogs from Coffee County Animal Control hitch a ride on this life-saving mission. 🐕

It takes a village to move a mountain (or a van full of dogs and cats!):

Some were beloved pets whose families were blindsided by a medical crisis they couldn’t afford.
Others were strays — injured, hurting — with kind-hearted people ready to adopt them… if only they could get through the emergency care first.

A dog was found laying under a tree with several injuries. Broken pelvis. Broken femur. Repaired eye. No name yet. Just pain — and someone hoping we could help.

So we said yes.

But here’s the truth: saying yes to this many critical cases, this quickly, is stretching us further than we’ve ever been stretched.

Emergency care for animals like this costs a lot on top of the "normal" shelter operations. And while we will always lead with compassion over judgment, we cannot sustain this without support from our community.

This video is hard to watch, but it’s a reality we cannot look away from. In one frame, you see the horrific physical toll of neglect—injuries that no living being should ever have to endure. In the next, you see the soul of a dog who, despite everything, still chooses to love.

Elvis is currently in our care, but he is very much touch and go. This is the result of being left outside, forgotten, and denied the basic compassion every animal deserves.

Elvis isn’t just one dog; he is the face of so many in our county. They are thrown outside like trash and left to face a long, slow, and lonely end. We are so grateful we could intervene for Elvis, but he has a long road ahead.

Community, we have to do better. Our animals deserve more than a life on a chain or in a dirt lot.

Frack’s story started with a challenge we see all too often: overpopulation. Born into an unwanted litter, he arrived at Animal Harbor shut down, undersocialized, and understandably terrified of the world. He wasn’t an "easy" dog, but he was a dog who deserved a chance.

That chance came in the form of a special volunteer and supporter named Kevin.
When Frack needed support most, Kevin stepped in to foster him, bringing him into his own home pack. Under Kevin’s patient wing—and with the guidance of his new pack—Frack found his voice, his confidence, and his security.

It turns out Frack was exactly where he was meant to be. After 13 months of being "unadopted", this week, Kevin made it official and finalized his adoption! Frack joins two other Animal Harbor alums at home, making him the third lucky pooch Kevin has rescued from our doors.

The "Animal Harbor Paparazzi" was out in full force to capture the moment this one-of-a-kind dog dad made his pack complete.

Kevin, thank you for seeing the potential in Frack and for being such a dedicated hero to our shelter pups.
