ADOPTION POLICY

Adoption RequirementsIt is easy to fall in love with many of the cats and dogs in our shelter. But all animals and adoptive families have different needs. So here are a few things to consider when choosing your new family member. Are you a "big" dog person or do you prefer a smaller dog? Do you want a lap cat or an independent one? Do you currently have pets? How long will the pet be left alone? Are you looking for a running partner or a fellow couch potato? Do you want a kitten or puppy, or are you looking for an adult animal? Do you have young children in the house? With a little information from you, our staff can help you find the perfect pet! We require a signed adoption contract and a fee to adopt a pet. Adopters must be at least 18 years old, and bring a photo ID. If you rent or live in a home with your parents you must provide a written statement with an up-to-date contact name and number for us to contact to confirm you can have a pet. This is not negotiable. You must have permission from your landlord before adopting any animal from our shelter. The Adoption Protocol- Pre-adoption Interview and Application - This includes a questionnaire that will help us help you choose the animal that fits you the best. You must do this even if you are coming to see an animal that you have seen on the website or our Facebook page. Please note that your adoption application will be denied or pending approval if the following application factors apply to you: you have unaltered animals; your landlord does not approve pets; current animals in the home are not up-to-date on vaccinations and preventatives; or a plan of action is not in place for the pet given something happens to you. 2 Week Foster - We will send an animal home with you on a trial basis. This allows you to see how the animal will do in your home setting. This part of our process has become a key factor in successful adoptions. The experience will tell you whether the animal will fit into your home and whether they will do well with the day-to-day schedule of your everyday life. We feel that out of all the steps this is the most important to ensure that the adoption is successful. We reserve the right to deny any adoption if we feel it is not in the best interest of the animal or the adopter. Our program is designed to match the right animal to the right family. The animal that you may have had in mind may or may not be a good match. If that is so we will work hard to find you the right cat or dog for your family.

Adoption FeesThe standard adoption fees are: Puppies (under 6 months) $200 Dogs $200 Kittens (under 6 months) $110 Cats $110 Adoption fees may be paid with cash, check, Mastercard, VISA, or Discover. We have reduced fees for senior citizens and veterans, and other special discounts ($75/cat $150/dog) Occasionally, people ask why there is any adoption fee at all when we are a non-profit organization whose mission is to place all our pets in permanent, loving homes. Unfortunately, it costs a lot of money to operate our shelter. We fund medical care, feeding costs, gas and electricity, telephone, Internet, building maintenance, office and building supplies, insurance, and a long list of other costs to keep the shelter running properly. We are not subsidized by any county, state, or national programs. To cover the cost of care for hundreds of animals yearly, we depend upon the donations of generous individuals wanting to do their part to ensure that our cats and dogs get the care that they deserve.
